Getting Started

This is an introduction video to Hyper-V.  Hyper-V is Microsoft's newest server virtualization solution.  It provides the infrastructure and basic management tools to create and administer a virtualized server or set of servers.

A Type 1 Hypervisor

A hypervisor (also called a virtual machine manager or VMM) is a form of software that allows you to install mulitple operating systems with each one believing they are running on a physical machine.  Typicall there are two types: Type 1 and Type 2 and this video will explain.

Microkernalized vs Monolithic

Hyper-V places the drivers into an administrative (parent) OS making the hypervisor smaller.  The smaller the hypervisor, the better the performance.

A Look at the Hyper-V Manager

There is more than one way to manage Hyper-V.  The Hyper-V Manager is included with the installation of the Hyper-V role and provides you the ability to view and administer your VMs, as you will see in this clip.

The New Virtual Machine Wizard

Adding a new virtual machine is easy through the New Virtual Machine Wizard.  We will show you how to follow the prompts and answer the questions to get your new VM up and running.

Working with the Virtual Machine Connection

The Virtual Machine Connection allows you to literally work with your VM as if you were working on a physical system.  In this lesson we will show you how to use the VM Connection.

Installing Integration Services

Integration Services provides a smoother look to the VM's you create with Hyper-V.  It also provides additional services that you wouldn't have otherwise if you don't install the Integration Services.

Snapshots

Shapshots provide a point-in-time snap of your existing VM that allows you to make changes without any worries that you will have a problem if something goes wrong.  You can alwasy restore the snapshot.

Quick Migration and Live Migration

In this lesson we give a basic overview of the need for a High Availability solution in place for your virtualized systems as well as an explanation for the benefits and limitations of Quick Migration and then the enhancements made with Live Migration.
